We wonder how any lawmaker can be proud of this new law

The reactions we’ve heard from several mothers after the final enactment of the non-labeling GMO labeling “law” go something like this:

“Then we have to assume that the only easy way to find non-GMO food is to look for a “Non-GMO Certified” label. We’ll have to assume that any food made with corn, soy, sugar or other crops that are predominantly GMO will have GMO content. Which means probable glyphosate residues.”

The dismay of many GMO labeling advocates could be summed up in the e-mail message which Moms Across America founder Zen Honeycutt sent July 30:

“You most likely heard by now that yesterday President Obama signed S 764, the Dark Act, into law.
This means that:

  • The words “GMO” or “genetic engineering” will NOT be required to be anywhere on the package
  • 95% of the ingredients that are GMO will NOT be included in the “labeling” and
  • The “labeling” that will be “required” is an option of a QR code, a telephone number, website or symbol.
  • There will be no fines for not complying, so claims that this law is “mandatory” are simply false.
  • Vermont’s state law which labeled GMOs is pre empted.
  • CT, ME and VA that have pending GMO labeling laws have also been pre empted.

“We hope that legal organizations will challenge these injustices.

“This law is highly discriminatory as well. Many senior citizens, minorities, low income and rural residents do not have access to wi fi, Smart phones or cell reception. We are deeply saddened, albeit not surprised that Obama signed this bill into law.

“So what’s next?

“After some venting and regrouping, we see that our mission and actions continue on. Our mission is still to empower millions to educate themselves about GMOs and related toxins, to offer GMO free and organic solutions. Our motto is still “Empowered Moms, Healthy Kids.”
Our end goal was never just to label GMOs, so we really have not lost.
Our end goal is the widespread distribution of organic food- access, affordability and healthy communities as a result.
Our end goal is for moms to be empowered in their communities to literally take America back by getting involved in our city and national systems.

“The fact is that if we don’t buy it, labels or not, they can’t sell it!
Food manufacturers will be forced to reformulate their products and use Non GMO and organic ingredients. Period.

“We continue to pass out our flyers, which continue to be relevant and true. We continue to talk, email, post about GMOs and toxins.
“Even if GMOs were labeled clearly, many people would still buy them because they do not read the ingredients or know what GMOs are.
“Our job continues to be to support them in finding out about the health risks of GMOs and toxins and the health benefits of organic.
“We must also stop the TPP, Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, which would eliminate GMO labeling globally.

“We thank you for your continued support. If you can donate to Moms Across America to help us expand our reach and empower more Americans, we appreciate any amount so much.
