Renewable Farming

Practical Farmers of Iowa receives a gift: A farm from longtime members

Practical Farmers of Iowa members Angela and John Tedesco of Johnston IA, have donated 13 acres of their 20-acre certified organic farm in Granger to Practical Farmers. It’s the first  land gift PFI has ever received.

January 27, 2017 —  The Tedescos intend to ensure the land’s agricultural legacy, rich soils and reservoir of wildlife don’t succumb to urbanization. Their land is just northwest of Des Moines and near Saylorville Lake, directly in the path of suburban development.

Angela operated these acres as Turtle Farm, one of Iowa’s first Community Supported Agriculture businesses, for 14 years on the land which was donated to PFI. She retired  in 2012 after renewing the land’s soil and habitat, plus making many capital improvements.

The gift is an indicator of how enthusiastic and committed farmers are to ecologically sound farming and the strong sense of connection and community which reinforces their way of farming.
